About

Founded in Italy in 2022, oltreoceano is a community-driven media and research platform focused on race, decolonial studies, and contemporary popular culture. The project brings together a transnational network of journalists, academics, activists, and writers who explore the global relationships between diasporic communities and the role of Afro-descendant people in shaping Western culture.

About

Our Mission

Our goal is not only to document cultural phenomena, but to provide critical tools that enable readers to interpret, question, and challenge dominant narratives about race, culture, and power. We see research and journalism as instruments of cultural and civic action, capable of reshaping public understanding and contributing to more informed and just societies.

What distinguishes our work is our editorial approach. oltreoceano prioritizes research, critical analysis, and historical and cultural contextualization over speed, virality, or trend-driven content. Alongside digital publishing, oltreoceano produces carefully curated print publications, including magazines conceived as long-lasting editorial objects.

The project was born from the collaboration of individuals with diverse cultural, racial, and social backgrounds. Aware that personal experiences and identities shape the way reality is interpreted, we have, from the outset, aimed to provide new tools for understanding through rigorous research and the collection of direct sources. Our approach seeks to deconstruct biases so that our content reflects a plurality of perspectives.

The viewpoint of oltreoceano is intentionally non-neutral, grounded in a decolonial critique of contemporary Western society and its global impact. We are an independent, bottom-up editorial initiative rooted in grassroots research and the collective production of knowledge. Since 2025, oltreoceano has been officially recognized in Italy as a non-profit association (oltreoceano APS).

Support Us

As a non-profit organization, oltreoceano depends on the support of readers who believe in independent, community-driven journalism and research. Your support allows us to continue investigating underrepresented histories, amplifying diasporic voices, and producing content that would not exist within mainstream editorial frameworks.

By contributing, you help sustain our editorial independence and the collective production of knowledge that defines our work. You can support oltreoceano by purchasing This Is America, the print magazine we produced between 2023 and 2025, or by buying our merchandise and carrying the project with you wherever you go. Visit the Support section to learn more.
